'The Human League: Austerity And Dreams'

So, here's something I don't know, a piece of history missing from my Human League/Heaven 17 lore: during the period that Glenn Gregory was living in London, before he returned to Sheffield and joined Heaven 17, he worked as a photographer for NME and Sounds. And one of the jobs that Sounds gave him was to travel up to Sheffield and photograph The Human League, playing the Limit Club.

It turns out that Gregory is a lifestyle minimalist and holds onto nothing. However, one roll of film from that session survived, having fallen down the back of a drawer. Gregory found it when moving studios and nearly threw it away before, on a whim, having it developed.

The pictures from that roll have been published as a limited edition book of 250 copies: 'The Human League: Austerity And Dreams'. As you can imagine, they are of variable quality but there are a couple of stunning shots and, of course, it's fascinating to look around the band at Sheffield in the 70s.

(Also pictured in my photo, Manuel Göttsching's 'E2 - E4', which arrived in the post, today. Described as "as one of the most important, influential electronic records ever released", on first listen it's really somewhat disappointing. I'm not surprised I'd never heard of it.)
