Animal Tiles

Derelict Sunday. 60plus.

We wandered through a 'new' local neighbourhood. New for us. There are very few newly established neighbourhoods in Portugal. These great old tiles have been chipped up a bit but still look wonderful to us.

Tiles (called azulejos) are everywhere in Portugal. They decorate everything from walls of churches and monasteries, to palaces, ordinary houses may have complete walls tiled, park seats, fountains, shops, and train stations.
Polished tiles originated in Egypt but Portugal uses them more than any country. And they are a true art form. In Lisbon, there is a spreading concern about pilferage of tiles. Too bad.

One extra shows the big picture. And another, a derelict tile 'wall'.
