Tropical Spontaneity

A term coined in conversation with Emma to describe our lives in Cambodia. Thanks to her I am remembering my time there in the fondest terms possible.

Perhaps Tropical Spontaneity is a lifestyle adopted by the Italian guy I was due to have a meeting with at a hotel next to the cathedral. Like him, my punctuality has got slowly worse the more time I’ve been exposed to life and work away from a very time-bound culture. Thirty minutes after we were due to start, I chased him and he said he’d be there ‘in a bit.’ It was suitably vague. Eventually we met and had a useful discussion about future collaborations.
