Anatole's blips

Alte Mühle

A lovely walk down to the old mill with our neighbours and some of the other locals. This mill was one of 60 in the area that were running until the 50s - most farms had one. Quite a small amount of water is diverted from the stream to push the wheel to turn a small grindstone in the mill house. Simple technology, built of wood from the forest, with a few bits of bent metal to strap and brace. Even the pipes and gears are wooden.

Followed by a superb rosti & beer in a traditional Austrian barn. The house next door was several hundred years old - built before glass windows, so just had small sliding panels. Now 'preserved', inside it was stained by centuries of soot from the oven and was a fantastic, but very dark historic cavern to explore for adults and children alike. See extras
