Art Deco entrance at Eltham Palace

The Courtaulds family, textile magnates, arrived at Eltham Palace in the 1930s.  They ensured the survival of the medieval surviving hall and created a spacious adjacent mansion in Art Deco style.  The photo shows the entrance hall of the mansion.
The site had been given to royalty in 1305.  Edward IV (reigned 1461-70) commissioned its Palace, including a magnificent hall, able to feed up to some 2,000 guests.

Royalty, including Henry VIII who was the last monarch to live in the palace, hosted many celebrations at the palace until the mid 16th century.  Thereafter most of the site's buildings were abandoned.
