Small Red

Ear;y morning walk with the spaniel in light rain and thunder over on Ashdown Forest. There wasn't much on the wing, just a few Ruddy Darters and  Large Red damselflies. I then realised they weren't Large Reds - which are  common and widespread - but the nationally scarce Small Red (Ceriagrion tenellum). The Small Red is one of smallest damselflies (about 25mm long compared to 35mm for the Large Red) and its abdomen is entirely bright red (at least in the male).
