Stilt walker

The Opiliones or Harvestmen are members of the Arachnid (Spider) order but differ in appearing to have a single body instead of a head and an abdomen like 'normal' spiders. They also  have very long legs which is why they are commonly referred to as Daddy Long Legs. Or Harvestmen because they appear around that season.

Their Latin name Opiliones is more interesting. It derives from the Latin word for shepherd. Why? Because in some parts of Southern Europe shepherds  at one  time used stilts to survey their flocks and to get around quickly on rough stony ground. Yes, shepherds on stilts was a thing - see here for example.

This specimen with its legs fanned out on either side is probably Dicranopalpus ramosus, recognisable by its characteristic spread posture and  its forked pedipalps resembling  sugar tongs. The species arrived in Britain from Morocco in 1957 and has subsequently spread all over. I imagine it's happy that high temperatures have followed it here.
