Stretham steam pump

Despite extensive drainage of the Fens in the 16th century, frequent flooding continued to wash away crops and livestock.  The windmills that pumped the water were inadequate as they were at the mercy of the weather.  The Stretham steam pump was built in 1831 by Butterleys of Derby at a cost of £4950 and replaced 4 windmills.
