Kawau Bay at low tide

Woken this morning by one of the lads. He returned to sleep, and I stayed up to head out for an early morning run. The rising sun was hidden by clouds throughout my run. However, there were enough gaps for golden light to make it through and reflect in the shallow pools and channels left by the retreating tide.

As I went along Erceg's Way I kept stopping to take the next in a series of photographs of which this was eventually the choice to blip. When it became obvious that the sun was going to remain obscured by cloud, I looked at the vast flats, and spotted a number of large birds.

The first three turned out to be black backed gulls, and the second pair were white faced herons. Managed to get close enough for quite a good picture of one; there have been many herons in this journal.

I then headed up to the main road, bought the newspaper, and returned home. After breakfast and newspaper, spent a bit of time with the children before heading back to Auckland with Mr H and Young L, and then back here with daughter J.

At Warkworth, we paused to get some doings for dinner tonight (courtesy of S) and while in the supermarket car park were entertained (if that is the right word) by the interaction between a driver who was heading the wrong way in a large camper van, and would not take the advice of the many others to go back. One obstructed woman informed him that she lived here and was prepared to spend the night there. Finally sorted with a fair amount of expressed emotion generally.

Back here, and Tsuken shortly arrived back from running more or less the same loop route as I had this morning, only in the opposite direction. Not a good day for being on the beach; lots of showers and a cool wind. Maybe tomorrow?
