Blasket Islands

A few years ago we spent a family holiday in Dingle on the South West coast of Ireland. Of course we had to get away from it all so we spent a night on Great Blasket Island - no electricity and just one place to sleep and another to eat in, run by a German couple - women, vegetarian, organised, and slightly resentful of intruders customers. Gill was sea sick all the way over and declared that she was never going back. The boys just couldn't believe we had brought them to such a desolate place and refused to walk the island with us, preferring instead to play football on the beach which they had to themselves.

Oh they enjoyed the high life, our kids, when they were younger. We used to go to quiet places with rock pools and let them get on with it. I remember we all swam with seals on Lundy Island. But Lundy was a metropolis compared with this place. The islands are famous (I'm stretching the word here a bit) for their writers and poets, the best known being Peig Sayers. I have a book about her somewhere. Anyway it was a great holiday and I must go back to Ireland soon. There's so much more I want to explore.

This picture of an old ship's bell is one of a few old digital images I've found to back blip.
