Ghost Story

There were two sorts of scary going on. It was dark and we were a little way from the town and we gave the kids an enjoyable fright by shining torches and telling stories about hitchhikers and long unopened boxes and strange coincidences. But, later, when the kids were asleep in the tent, we felt a different kind of scary. And this time it was not about people, it was about place. It felt like we weren’t supposed to be there.

It was silly to be scared of the dark and the trees but, nevertheless, we invented an emergency and woke the kids up and, throwing things into our bags any old how, we went home.
