The Outer Hebrides

A long time ago when I was a girl (?) I walked and hitch hiked on the Outer Hebrides.  There was no youth hostel there in these days and we had a B&B in Stornoway and hiked from there. We made it as far as South Uist, and saw the Stones of Callanish among other things, which were not so well known as today.

But I didn't get as far as Barra and always wanted to get there, so as this year we had to cancel our walking holidays due to my surgery, we decided to have a coach tour of the Outer Hebrides.

We left today (Aug 11) and travelled up to Uig in Skye, where we boarded the ferry 'Hebrides' for Lochmaddy in North Uist.  A sailing of two hours roughly and just amazing, we loved every minute.  The weather was superb which makes a great difference and the sea was like glass.  Lots of small islands dotted around, mostly uninhabited, and spotted seals and a lot of sea birds.  The sun was lowering in the sky as we reached Lochmaddy and I thought it made a nice picture.

On arrived at Lochmaddy we made our way from North Uist over the causeway to Benbecula, where our hotel was located.

A long day but so enjoyable.  Tomorrow should be great!
