Stake Nets

These are the remnants of stake nets in Auchencairn Bay in the Solway, in Dumfriesshire. Popular from the 18th century, the nets and stakes were set up on the sandflats at low tide, and trapped salmon on the receding high tide. Whilst the stakes in this picture are old and disused, I saw modern nets further down the shore towards Balcary Bay.
