A house in a box

The Hill House, in Helensburgh, is a great architectural masterpiece. Charles Rennie Mackintosh created one of the finest dwelling houses in the world, but sadly, the modern design materials he chose cannot withstand the damp.

National Trust of Scotland held an international competition to design a protective cover. Carmody Groarke won and this summer, The Hill House reopened for visitors.

It’s magnificent, as are the interior designs, which Mackintosh worked together with his wife Margaret Macdonald to develop (extras).

You can climb up above the house, and walk along the walkways. Well worth a visit.
