The Moffat Ram

To Dumfries today to inter aunt’s ashes. It rained incessantly.

Passing through Moffat I blipped The Moffat Ram. I found it described online as “anatomically deficient “.

I was a little perturbed till I read that at its unveiling a farmer shouted out “it’s got nae lugs”. William Brodie, the sculptor, was said to have committed suicide later, having never come to terms with the shame. His ghost is said to haunt the local hotel.

But in reality he died of natural causes 6 years later, at home in Merchiston Place, Edinburgh.
