Þingvellir and the Atlantic Rift

Having been spending time in the north of Iceland we were wondering how we would react to the crowds when we got to the southern area and the tour known as the Golden Circle.  In fact it was interesting to see just how many people Þingvellir could absorb without feeling overfull.
Here you can see one of four or five carparks and on the left the main drag where visitors walk between the various sites.
The rocks upon which I am standing  are part of the American plate. In front of me is the Atlantic rift, and those distant hills are the edge of the Eurasian plate.
In the extra you can see the view where the river runs into the lake. That image is taken from up the river , somewhere on the left of this photo, and you can see another view of the church and house in the middle of this picture.
Þingvellir is a wonderful place, scenically, geologically, and historically. Well worth a visit, even if you do have to share it with other visitors!
