A Then & Now blip with a difference...

... of Kirkgate in Ripon.

The original in this case is based on a 1797 graphite-on-paper drawing by J M W Turner, published on a leaflet by Ripon City Trust, by permission of the Tate Gallery.

The buildings have changed to varying degrees over 200+ years but many look very similar to the sketch, although the cathedral gatehouse is no longer there.

However, the artist had 'widened' the street considerably to allow him to show the topographic details of the buildings on both sides. I toyed with the idea of using a fish-eye lens to try to do something similar but that would have added horrific distortion.

I have included an extra showing the West frontage of the Cathedral in its sunlit splendour.
