My enemy’s enemy

Some predicted that Mankind would be defeated by Nature - implacably wiping us off the face of the world once we had enjoyed our five minutes in the sun. Others saw us falling victim to our own technology - the creators vanquished by their creations.

The fact that the truth was a mix of the two came as something of a surprise.
