The Other Home

Well,  16 year old Swedish Greta Thunberg made news today  (it was on the canadian news!)  by sailing from England to NYC with wind power, the last 2 weeks. ( and solar panels and underwater turbines to power the electronics on this bare bones racing yacht)   It’s been so heartening reading about her inspiring people and young people to pay attention to the environmental crisis upon us.  The NYT had an article in June about travel and how enormous the impact is on our planet with the carbon emissions causing global warming.    “ 32 sq ft of sea ice cover that is ONE passenger’s share of CO2 emissions melts on a one way flight from New York to Los Angelos”     Wow.    I also read another article that said many Swedes are choosing not to fly.  Of course ships and cars do damage too. There are zillions of articles on this subject..just google it…  It’s a moral dilemma…what difference can one person make?   And then..of course we want our grandchildren to experience and know about other (more sane?)  parts of the world!
We are flying less, but mostly because we’re old and have been a LOT of places… AND we have this bit of paradise…We do drive here (2 hr 20 min, take a 50 min ferry and then drive 15 minutes to the marina where we use our motor boat to get here in 15 min  or less.   I wonder how much ice that melts. ?    So much to think about….but we are  protecting it and the trees…

I’m actually posting this picture because blipper LoisBiz wanted to know how many steps to get to our cabin and not sure I have blipped one just like this.  I’m  standing about 20 feet up from the top of the wharf, there are 50 steps to the front door not all with railings.(should be.. extra)    BUT…there is a golf cart and a back path that will carry groceries etc up there.  Except in the winter when it’s too wet and muddy to get up the hill. The steps on the left is the wood sauna at the top of the dock (the idea was to take a dip in the cold water….ha !)  Whyte Strand is our name… Whyte for H’s Mom and Strand for mine.    Our beach is white shells..  We are getting so we are perfectly happy not going too far.  But I’m sure we will get on an airplane again…as was the author of the NYT article that I read..

this internet has gotten excruciatingly slow
