Life in a Northern Town

Godafoss (again)

Our last day - we set off at around 9am to leisurely drive back to Keflavik - on the way we stopped again at Godafoss. Approaching from the east is a whole different experience as you drive over the crest of a hill and the falls are there in the middle of the fields - quite breathtaking. This is an iPhone Live photo converted to a long exposure - cheating but it saves a tripod!

We glimpsed Auroras the night before - so my sister in law and I maintain our 100% record of Northern Lights on our trips.

The outward drive around Route 1 was done on no sleep and I barely remember it - this one was splendid - the scenery is jaw dropping. Iceland's roads are very safe, it's said that the biggest risk is tourists driving off the road whilst gawping at the view. I managed to stay on the roads - some of which were quite scary it must be said, especially the mountain pass to Akureyri. It has been by-passed with a tunnel as it is often impassable in winter - in the sunshine it was incredible, and also saved us the £10 tunnel toll! I've put a couple of roadside views in extras.

We stopped for civilised coffee in Akureyri then continued onwards, with many stops for viewing, eventually getting to our accommodation next to the airport at about 7pm. We planned to explore the Keflavik peninsula area but were too tired, so we consumed some very expensive wine, ate our sandwiches for dinner and slept. An early flight back and promises of a return for our fifth trip soon.
