James Gowans Memorial

Many's the time we have passed Grange Cemetery (especially as it is right opposite the pharmacy) and declared that 'we really must visit this gravestone'. Today we did.

Sir James Gowans is responsible for several constructions within the city and environs, some still visible, including the sundial at the West end of the Meadows, the Brassfounders' Pillar in Nicolson Square gardens and the buildings on the Eastern end of Castle Terrace, others such as Rockville, his home, demolished before his unique style was recognised or appreciated.

This is his gravestone, designed with a nod to his architectural talent, although I would have expected more expression of his instantly recognisable style - a variety of stones sourced from different quarries.
