Holy Trinity Church ruins

What an interesting day.  It was a U3A geology trip and we headed to Buckfastleigh where we had arranged a tour of the limestone caves at the William Pengelly Cave Study Centre.  The caves are known for a very large collection of fossilised bones from elephants, hippos, bison, hyenas living 100,000 years ago. Several species of bats roost in some of the caves. A Lamprophyre Dyke was pointed out and the Sticklepath fault.  All of which was interesting and then we walked into the remains of the Holy Trinity Church which was destroyed by a fire in 1992.  It has an interesting history involving a wicked Lord of the Manor who legend said that when he died hounds came off the moor and howled around his tomb which is in the churchyard.  The Hounds of the Baskervilles was based on a story told by a coachman named Baskerville who was driving Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to Buckfastleigh.

We then headed to Brimpts Farm near Dartmeet where we indulged in a cream tea and then were shown the remains of Tin mining works just visible if you know what to look for around the nearby fields.    They have produced a working small model of how the tin was mined and processed and have a large amount of information and knowledge concerning the industry.

A very busy day and then it was a camera club evening meeting.  I remembered that Wide Wednesday was architectural so thought the ruins may do for this but not so sure it would suit city architecture though.
