Off to a new life

Last night our granddaughter phoned up to say that she had been given a project at school to research the life of a family ancestor. She has picked her great grandad, MrsW's dad, as her subject which is a brilliant choice and has sent MrsW off on a paper chase. MrsW's dad was one of life's 'entrepreneurs'. At various points in his life he ran several cinemas, hotels, general stores, post offices and also had been a member of the magic circle (family story has it that he gave Tommy Cooper an early break). He also served an apprenticeship as an upholsterer and was a chiropodist for some time. Oh and he was a Methodist lay preacher..... there is more.

For a short while before MrsW was born dad and mum set off for Southern Rhodesia to run 'the longest bar in Bulawayo'. It was while we were leafing through old documents of this journey we heard that Robert Mugabe had died. MrsW gave a little shudder at the realisation that if that venture had been successful she would have grown up in a country first under Ian Smith and then under Robert Mugabe. Maybe there are some things worse than Britain under Boris
