In 1950 ....

.... in Lethen, Nairnshire,
there were no trees at all in this wood.
They'd all been cut down during the Second World War.

But there were Welsh pit ponies, which had been rescued I think.
Some were not so healthy, maybe a bit blind,
but they could run for the first time in their lives.

When we were children we would listen
for the thunder of their running
and then see thirty or forty of them
charging round and round in wild happiness.
And they would never come near us
for fear that we might catch them
and take them back down the mine.
