The Execution of Balthasar Gerard

After the Oude and Nieuwe Kerk yesterday, this morning open monumentendag brought me to the Prinsenhoff. I hadn’t been before and wanted to know whether it would be worth returning with one of my next visitors. Yes, it is!
This is where poor critter William of Oranje was murdered in 1584 by Balthasar Gerard, supporter of the Spanish cause. Balthasar was apprehended, tortured and executed at the Markt in Delft a few days later. “First, the executioners burned his right hand, with which he fired the fatal shot, in a red-hot waffle iron. Next, they cut open his belly and removed his intestines. They threw his heart in his face. Balthasar is said not to have made a sound.” I normally buy cheese and sausages at the Markt. And waffles. The same place.
