Gateway to the Highlands

Today’s blip was relatively easy – a quick trip down the road to Stirling Old Bridge.

This iconic  stone bridge is one of the most critical river crossings in Scotland. As ’gateway to the Highlands’, Stirling is of tremendous strategic importance, and it was built in the late 1400s or early 1500s.

Before that there were a succession of timber structures here.

Undoubtedly the best known of these was one that stood nearby in the 1290s, when Sir William Wallace defeated an English army at the battle of Stirling Bridge.

Thanks to Freyjad for hosting wide angle Wednesday with the theme of “bridge”.
