La vielle ville, Nice

Up early and on the train to Nice, which took most of the day. We calculated that it is 39 years since we were last there; our principal memory of the town being sharing a massive ice cream sundae in a very swanky ice cream parlour on the Promenade des Anglais.

We didn't have much time to explore today; after settling into the hotel we set off for a stroll and an apero in the old town, getting there by tram to save my poor foot. This photo perhaps doesn't give the right impression; it was heaving with tourists. We dawdled about looking for dinner and finally settled for pizzas in an Italian restaurant. They were pretty good, if rather larger than we really needed after a day sitting on a train.

Nice is a city of windows ... see first extra.  Lovely combinations of muted and brighter colours, mostly faded and charmingly shabby. Lots of photo opportunities but the light was a bit dim by then. See also the Promenade des Anglais in a cloudy dusk (second extra). Onwards tomorrow!
