I spoke to two people who asked what I was studying. To one I said 'Integrative psychotherapy' and to the other 'counselling'. The difference in response was astounding. Somewhat taken aback vs a smile. I think how a counsellor or therapist presents themselves is really key. Do I want to come across as an expert, someone who knows a lot more than my client, or someone approachable? So far I've met a few people on both sides of the fence. At this point, although psychotherapist sounds more 'impressive', I much prefer the idea of someone smiling at what I'm choosing to do rather than looking slightly intimidated. So I shall stick to counselling for now I think.
