Please do not feed the Kaka

Today we visited Pukaha Mount Bruce, a bird reserve near Eketahuna. Our main reason for visiting was to see Mukura, the first white kiwi to be hatched in captivity. Lovely to see but almost impossible to photograph in the dark without a flash! The park has a successful breeding program of native New Zealand birds and currently has an estimated 160 kaka in the area. At 3pm every day the birds are enticed down from the trees by a snack of apple and sweet corn. Their antics as they quarrel over the treats are well worth seeing! I was later harrassed outside the cafe by one who was intent on helping himself to my capuccino...
