HMS Prince of Wales

We were having lunch out when we discovered that, contrary to all indications, the new aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, constructed in Rosyth dockyard, was about to begin sea trials. We had already seen her sister ship HMS Queen Elizabeth, so what else to do but try to catch sight of it.
This proved easier said than done - rush hour traffic build-up and roadworks made progress slow. However, nothing daunted, and after a brief stop at the Bridges Viewpoint, from which only the radar scanner was visible above the trees, we reached a popular position at Society (on the approach road to Hopetoun House). Here at the water's edge we joined several others to marvel at the size of the ship - for scale, on the left in the photo is the tugboat Hopetoun, to the right one of several police boats, protecting the vessel for marine traffic.

We may now watch the marine traffic website to monitor its departure, said to be at the weekend at low tide to enable the passage of its mighty bulk below the three bridges.
