Telaro

Late morning we headed to the bay of poets and Lerici, which has a beautiful promenade and harbour. Unfortunately though it was very busy and we couldn’t find a parking space anywhere so instead we went to the next town along the coast, Telaro. It’s quite small but so pretty and much quieter, with a tiny harbour where we sat and had spritz whilst the church bells rang. You always know the time in Italy. The colours of the buildings all stacked up on top of and around one another with cobbled streets is fabulous. There’s washing hanging on lines lines from windows, cats lazing in the sun, kids playing, and aromas of food.
We’ve learnt over the years that you need to get food between 12 and 2pm or you’ve had as everything shuts from 2pm to 5pm. Lunch today was at the top of the town, sat outside in glorious sunshine with a parasol, thank heavens, as it’s 29C. R and I chose the grilled fish platter to share which came as a huge fish with a few very large prawns and some octopus too accompanied by a mixed salad. Heaven.
Late afternoon we went back down the coast to San Torenzo for ice cream, followed by our first swim in the sea this year which was great.
This evening was the closing night of the bar in the village, which we’d never been into on our previous visits, as we’d always had something else planned. Tonight though all the locals were going and so after a light dinner, although tired we said we’d go for one drink. Famous last words.
It was brilliant, lots of locals chatting, and very friendly, with me trying to speak Italian and them doing better with their English, and lots of gesticulations managing to understand each other. Then the karaoke started and of course we joined in. For R it was her first time, but there were 3 microphones and lots of us up reading from the screen and singing along to some familiar English songs. When those ran out we even tried singing along in Italian, usually managing the last word or each line.
It was fantastic and We were loving it. Matt & Lori left as he was working in the morning and R and I quietly snuck in a few hours later at 3.30am.
