This picture (and the Extra - I can’t decide which one I like best...) rather put me in mind of the work of the American Civil War photographer Mathew Brady (a chap who I think looked uncannily like Billy Connolly... https://www.battlefields.org/learn/biographies/mathew-brady ) Not that I’m claiming to be in his league, I hasten to add!

My pictures aren’t of a Union or Confederate soldier. Obviously. He’s actually a nattily attired double bass player who performed at the Wirral Earth Festival this afternoon and whose name I didn’t catch, I’m afraid.

Mathew Brady’s photographs were a big influence on Elliott Landy, whose pictures of The Band are some of my favourite examples of ‘rock portraiture’ https://elliottlandy.com/portfolio-items/the-band-gallery/nggallery/page/2

And one of The Band’s best known songs concerns the American Civil War... ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down’ https://youtube.com/watch?v=6dDbnwQlCek so that’s my song for today!
