THE ROUND HOUSE

The Round House is the oldest existing public building in Western Australia. Opened in January 1831, just 18 months after European settlement, it was built to hold people convicted of a crime and was used until 1886 until its replacement, Fremantle Prison in 1858.

Historically, the headland west of the Round House was an ideal site to send signals out to sea and over the years a variety of signalling systems were used.  All very fascinating.

The extra is the cannon located west of The Round House and is fired daily at 1pm re-enacting a tradition dating back to the 1880s.  When I looked closely at the snap, there appears to be a warship on the horizon.  Too small to recognise here - all friendly of course. :))

Anyhow, a wonderful place to visit when you're in Fremantle making sure you're there before 330pm as it's very interesting to see the cells and other items from way back when.
