The Tehuelche Indians knew him by the name of ‘the eye of God’. However, after the war against the original peoples led by Julio Argentino Roca in 1880, the name was replaced by another, in honor of an Interior Ministry official who was responsible for paying salaries to the military, hence the current name: Gutierrez
