Winged Figure

Today’s the day ......................... for culture

On our return journey now, back to Sowerby Bridge – but the chance to moor up in Wakefield and visit the Hepworth Gallery, was too good to miss.

The Hepworth Wakefield opened on 21 May 2011 and takes its name from artist and sculptor, Barbara Hepworth who was born and educated in the city.  It cost £35 million to build but five weeks after opening it had received 100,000 visitors.  In May 2012 it celebrated its first birthday, having received over 500,000 visitors in the year.  In October 2015, the gallery launched the £30,000 biennial as part of the celebrations marking its 5th anniversary.

This is a magnificent work by Barbara Hepworth, commissioned by the John Lewis Partnership in 1961.  It is in aluminium with Isopon for surface texture and is called, ‘Winged Figure’ ..................
