Suomenlinna

We took a fifteen minute ferry ride to the Sea Fortress island of Suomenlinna. It's been a World Heritage Site since 1991 and is home to about 800 permanent residents. Extra #1 is the memorial to Augustin Ehrensvärd, the architect of the fortress. Extra #2 is King's Gate, the iconic symbol of the island. It was built between 1753 and 1754 as a ceremonial gateway to the fortress. Extra #3 is another of the one million visitors, happily not all at the same time. Extra #4 is Helsinki Cathedral above Senate Square in the morning sunshine.
