LST909

Off To War

In 1944 Ned joined the crew of the newly-launched USS LST-909 -- a tank landing ship.  These vessels were first developed during World War II to support amphibious operations by carrying troops, cargo, and heavy equipment directly onto shore without the need for docks or piers.  The bow of the LST had a massive door that opened with a ramp for unloading vehicles.

The group photograph was taken in Honolulu in 1944 shortly after Ned joined the ship.  He is on the right side of the back row.  The other men are simply identified as "Frost, Ruhf, and Conley."  The photograph showing the deck of the 909 is captioned "Ship's company at quarters.  Tall cylinders are vent stacks from tank deck below.  Water puddles caused by sag of 1/4" mild steel deck plates!"
