In the early 1970s when they started, the villagers in Gjirokaster didn't know what the muffled dynamite explosions coming from below the castle meant and in the time of the deranged Enver Hoxha, it was better not to ask.

Even today not much is known about the tunnelling. Prisoners that worked to make it were summarily excuted. Records of costs do not exist. It was never finished.
