Common Orb Spider?

I think the i/d is correct. I found this quite large hairy spider when I was cutting back a Lavender bush now that the flowers are spent. He was anxious to get away and shinned up a rose stem which made focussing something of a challenge.
 Have been a bit lax on commenting over the last few days but now that our guests have departed hopefully things will return to normal
