Elevador da Gloria, Lisbon

This is one of the funiculars which rise up to the Bairro Alto and saves a great deal of huffing and puffing and sore feet. We began our day with a bit of shopping in El Corte Inglés, had lunch nearby, then got the metro back down to Restaurodores Square to pick up the funicular. We already knew that the Solar do Vinho do Porto would be right beside the elevador when we got to the top, and we were pretty sure we'd need a pit stop by then and decided a few glasses of port would go down well. The guide book warned about the 'notoriously snooty' waiters, and there was perhaps just a touch of that. All in all, though, our tasting session was very enjoyable and informative (main lesson for me was how nice the Ruby Port was, which I'd never think of getting back home).

Since the Bairro Alto is right beside our apartment, we walked back down through its narrow streets and were surprised at how quickly we were back in familiar territory. We stumbled on a restaurant which we thought might end up being our choice for the night, grabbed a short siesta, and headed back out for our final evening in Lisbon. An extra bit of research left us with three different restaurant possibilities on our list, and we finally plumped for a really tiny and intimate one which looked more like a shop from the outside. The food was okay, the wine was nice: all in all, another enjoyable eating experience.

We strolled through the Bairro Alto again afterwards looking for somewhere for a final drink and ended up in the Cervejaria Trindade for a couple of beers. Back home, it was time to pack, since we needed to catch a taxi at 7.30 am to get us to the airport.
