University of Salamanca

This is the university's main entrance--an overwhelming structure. Founded in 1134,  it is  "the oldest university in the Spanish-speaking world and the third oldest university in the entire world still in operation", to quote Wikipedia. We toured it today, seeing a number of classrooms, lecture halls and assembly areas. The university enrolls 27,000 students, with just under 2,000 faculty.  I have known about it since studying the history of  European higher education in graduate school in the 1970s, so it was wonderful to experience it first hand.  We also visited another venerable institution: The  Convento de San Estaban, a Dominican monastery, with a large and far more lavish interior than the university :)
