Pecking order...

... seemed to be important today.

This great spotted woodpecker had spent some time on the bird feeder at Harlow Carr this morning and then flew off. But it only travelled a short distance to a branch where it appeared to be hiding the seeds from the feeder, or retrieving some left there earlier.

Then, suddenly, it departed, leaving me with an empty viewfinder. But it was immediately filled by the nuthatch (see the first extra) which started to make good use of those same nuts and seeds.

Then something else made sense - whilst the woodpecker had been on the branch it had looked up several times (second extra) - clearly noticing the scavenger waiting in the shadows..
