Auschwitz & Birkenau

A long day, but a very thought provoking one.  Only took these few photos as it felt completely wrong to take photos inside which showed the human suffering, belongings, hair, gas chambers, crematoria etc.  Some nationalities didn’t seem to have any issues with this, and took a photo of every single thing we passed even using flash when they were constantly told not to do so. Initially not as harrowing as many of us had expected, but we were lucky in that we got a brilliant guide who spoke with passion and emotion and made the whole day so interesting.  I think we were fine with it all until we were told about the type of experiments carried out there, especially on the women and children - some unimaginable horrors.  A lot of walking and standing, and not good for people less physically able.  Even though there is not much there, Birkenau somehow seemed worse than Auschwitz 1, especially the memorial, and the "end of the line” rail tracks.  We got on well with the 2 couples in our minivan, and ended up having drinks with one couple later in the evening. We all felt rather shellshocked and had to head straight to a wine bar after the experience - carafe of wine for £4 - you can imagine how we will feel in the morning!
