Cádiz- Day 2

Today is Ben’s ninth birthday and sad won’t see him but will FaceTime later.

Breakfast was in a cosy little Cafe that was also a library and frequented by the locals and a couple of tourists apart from us. Everywhere in the old town is nearby so it’s not far to walk at all to anything. We headed down to the cathedral square as we wanted to climb to the top of it to the bell tower for the views over the city and sea. Cádiz is the oldest city in Europe and has a magnificent outlook over the Atlantic sea. There was a warning at the top regarding the noise from the bells every 15 mins and just as two German ladies opened the door to the top the bells sounded - we all had a chuckle as their welcome was LOUD!

Next stop a few steps away was the local Mercado, under cover with lots of little stalls selling food and drink round it. The variety of fruit and vegetables grown locally was first class, large and colourful and fresh straight from the fields. And the fish stalls! Varieties I had never seen before, it was a delight wandering round watching people buy and the stall holders gutting and scraping the fish for the customers. I got some grilled prawns freshly cooked as I waited and they were delicious.

All that walking and looking at food made us hungry so we headed to one of the oldest Cafes in Cádiz, Cafe Royalty which has kept its decor from 1912 with music to match. We shared one of their specialities the pancakes , filled with chocolate, banana and blueberries - mmmm delish.

It is set in a beautiful square and there was this amazing dog with a top knot that I had to take a picture of called Tango - a Portuguese water spaniel.

We wandered along the promenade next and decided to sit on the beach and read our books for a bit. Caleta beach has lovely soft sand, very well looked after with bins everywhere for rubbish, showers and water fountain.

We walked round the headland and stopped off for coffe and cake at a French patisserie serving the lightest of sponge cakes with cream.

Home to have a relax and evening meal was sitting out at a local restaurant where at the next table was a fellow Scot and his welsh wife. Good chat while we ate. As we walked home got a call from Benny Boy and so good to see and speak and get all the chat.

I ate grilled prawns probably saw them at the market this morning!
