Nokomai ski hut

Can you believe that the original ski hut was dragged up this mountain with old trucks early 1900s. When the trucks could go no further that is where the hut stayed. Over the years it was built onto. To go skiing you had to walk up the mountain with all your gear including firewood, if you were going to stay in the hut.

Nowadays the hut needs a good clean, the mattresses are totally uninviting although if you got caught up here in a storm you would be glad of the shelter.

It is high in private run country which goes onto DOC land. Pretty high isn't it.

The extra is the awesome landscape even higher up as you travel through the Nokomai end of the Nevis, a 4wheel drive track from Cromwell to Nokomai.
