A day in the life

Brittsummer

Todays calendar says October 7. In Swedish calendars people named "Britt" and "Birgitta" both celebrate their name day. Not all countries have this tradition of designating a name to every day of the year. Some people celebrate the day almost as their birthday. My day, "Kjell" is July 8. Nowadays most days of the year has two or more names attached to them, and of course a lot of Catholic saints has their own day too.

We use an expression, "Brittsommar" (Britt summer), meaning that around the 7th of October one or more summerlike days usually occurs. One legend says, according to our Meteorological institute, that the Swedish saint Birgitta, who thought Sweden was a too cold place, used to pray for warmer weather. The Lord heard her and let there be a warm period around the day she was declared a saint by the pope, October 7.
The expression in USA is, I think, "Indian summer".

We had a lovely Brittsummers day today. Not the twenty degrees that the rules for summer states, but warm enough to enjoy my coffee and pudding after my lunch outside on my veranda.
