Finke River Race

The iconic Finke Desert Race is an off-road, multi terrain two day race for bikes, cars, buggies and quads through desert country from Alice Springs to the small Aputula (Finke) community. The race is held each year on the Queens Birthday long weekend in June.

There were 4WDs galore trouping through town, dragging camper trailers, caravans and every racing machine that you could imagine.
I drove past the camp ground just outside The Gap, where the road continues on the other side of the Macdonnells, and gasped at the sight of all the gear on display. The camping setups in Australia are amazing and sophisticated.

I didn't manage to get out to look at the race itself, but a friend and I did see the dust being thrown up, when we went ballooning! More about that later .....
