How did this happen?

Well, we are a bit bemused by the current happenings, isn’t everyone! But we are more amazed that we two have reached this particular day and just wonder where the time went. If I tell you that the photo in extras was taken on the 18th of October 1969, maybe that’s a clue.

We were just out of college and had only been in our first teaching post for a few weeks. We had no money. My parents did everything for the wedding and we just had enough funds for a few days in London as a honeymoon. So, that is where we have come for the weekend . . . 50 years later. Astonishing to think of it!

Being the no-fuss people we are, we have spent a quiet day on our own, doing the things we like doing. We started the day with a splendid breakfast (including Bucks Fizz) at Granary Wharfe - sitting in the sunshine overlooking the canal. Then we have been on plenty of buses - to the British Museum, where we were a little disappointed with the Islamic exhibition, but had a great time finding things in the rest of the museum, some that we didn’t even realise were there. An excellent cream tea was followed by a trip to the fabulous Daunt Bookshop in Marylebone. Books were bought.

We were not going to involve family in this anniversary, until our son-in-law pointed out that he was very glad we had got married when we did! So happenings tomorrow.
