King Alfred

Meet King Alfred. He was born in 849 AD in my home town of Wantage. As he's so old I thought I'd make his photo a bit grungy. I did take it today though! His statue was unveiled on 14 July 1877 by the Prince and Princess of Wales. It was presented to the town by Robert Loyd-Lindsay, 1st Baron Wantage. Although Wantage is being swallowed up by new housing, it still has some lovely architecture and some fascinating history
