tempus fugit

Decked out for the season

Elder, blackthorn, ivy and bramble bushes go for the deep purples and intense blacks,  hawthorn, dog rose, guelder and rowan advertise their fruit with shades of vermillion and crimson but for really seeing red nothing can beat the  scarlet ropes of briony berries slung over bushes and hedges.

This is probably the most the biggest mass I've ever seen in one place.  From the other side of the field I was fooled into thinking it was a piece of red cloth or plastic hanging on the fence. The vines had  twisted and woven themselves into a mass of concentrated colour exposed by the withering of the leaves.

There are two sorts of briony, white and black,  but they are not related. The former is a member of the cucumber family and the latter, which I think this to be, is related to the yam. Both however are toxic except to the birds  for whom the berries provide a welcome pre-winter feast.
